I regularly receive questions about readers looking for shirts with a generous button-down collar:
It must be recognized that these shirts have a certain charm and fit well into formal outfits with more classic proportions
And also more relaxed:
The fact that the collar rolls and undulates is particularly appreciated by connoisseurs:
The history of the button-down collar being intrinsically linked to that of the Oxford shirt, you will find a lot of Oxfords in this selection... and not only that!
If you haven't already done so, I invite you to watch the episode of VIRAL on this subject to find out everything about OCBD
Before moving on to the selection, I would like to clarify two points:
1. How do you measure the height of a shirt collar?
Like this :
2. What is a “grand pass”?
The current average collar height on the market is between 5 and 6cm.
Knowing that 6.5cm seems to me to be a good option to have something larger than average, but not too imposing either.
From 7cm, a collar can be considered generous.
To find out more about shirt collars, I invite you to read this article which will teach you in particular about the appropriate length of the collar for your head.
Entry level
It is difficult to find shirts with a slightly stronger style statement such as a fairly large button-down collar at the entry level.
However, here is what I can offer you.
1. Gutteridge
The Italian brand is rarely mentioned in our columns because it does not have a store in France and did not offer deliveries in France until recently.
Having gone to a brand store during a trip to Milan in 2019, I found the correct products for the price . To make a comparison, I'd say it's a little better than Massimo Dutti but below Suitsupply .
A good choice for a shirt as we are interested in here.
2. Field of Maneuvers
The French brand offers two button-down collar oxford shirts (white and sky blue) with a straight cut.
The collar is not very large but quite reasonable in size.
The fabric seems rather thick.
Midrange
If you dig deeper, you can find many mid-range brands (around €100) offering beautiful shirts, with pretty button-down collars.
1. BD Baggies
BD Baggies is a historic American brand on button-down collar Oxford shirts, just like Brooks Brothers or Gitman Vintage which I talk about below.
The products are of honest quality but are not made in the United States.
In terms of French distributors, you can get BD Baggies at Beau Bien Store, Les Flâneurs and Elevation Store.
In Europe with delivery to France, look at Content Store London .
2. Natalino
The young English brand offers a rather classic wardrobe including button-down collar shirts.
Jordan had the opportunity to present to you a shirt from the brand, with an open collar, in nuggets .
3. Hartford
The French brand's button-down , at 6.5cm, is well balanced and will suit the majority of men.
4. Boggi Milano
The Italian brand's eshop is not the most welcoming and ergonomic there is, but it does offer a fairly wide range of button-down collar shirts.
5. Scavini
You probably know Scavini more for its recommended pants or its half-measure service, but it also offers shirts in its ready-to-wear collection.
6. Kamakura Shirts
Kamakura is a Japanese brand created in 1993 which offers Ivy League-inspired shirts made in Japan at reasonable prices.
The brand offers an impressive collection of button-down collar shirts.
Delivery is made from Japan, so customs fees may apply for delivery to France.
7. Spier&Mckay
Spier&Mckay is a Canadian tailoring brand with a rather classic style, appreciated in particular by our colleagues at Parisian Gentleman .
The prices are affordable but the brand ships from Canada. Customs fees may apply for delivery to France.
8. Suitsupply
The brand offers few button-down collar shirts but there are always two or three per season.
9. Granqvist Store
Granqvist is a Swedish brand that I recently had the opportunity to mention in my nuggets .
It offers a nice range of oxford shirts, with stripes and slightly brighter colors.
10. Poszetka
Good Polish sartorial, relatively accessible.
We offered you the test of a 3-piece suit.
The shirts look just fine to me.
11. Benevento
I had the opportunity to introduce you to Benevento, whose main product is pants, but the Polish brand/workshop also offers some shirts in Italian fabric from Monti.
Top of the line
1. ABCL Garments
Mattia offers some shirts with a beautiful button-down collar in his collections.
2. Berg&Berg
The Swedish brand offers beautiful shirts.
The Oxford is notably Japanese and comes from Kuwamura.
3. Gitman Vintage
Gitman is an American brand that I have already had the opportunity to present .
Due to the coronavirus crisis, the brand's historic workshop unfortunately had to close its doors .
That being said, the shirts are still made in the United States.
In France, the brand is distributed at Beau Bien Store.
In Europe with delivery to France, look at Mr.Porter, EndClothing, Frans Boone Store, Farfetch or Yoox .
4. Drake’s
A beautiful English brand.
A beautiful English confection.
Very beautiful lookbooks and beautiful shirts.
5. Husband’s
The French brand whose work we particularly appreciate offers in its ready-to-wear collection very beautiful dress shirts with buttoned collars.
6. Gyappu
A French brand appreciated by Nicolò and also by you, readers, for the feedback you give us.
Fabrics, cuts, construction: it's all good!
7. Beige Dresser
The eshop offers, as part of its own brand, beautiful shirts made in France with a very generous collar.
8. G.Inglese
High-end Italian shirts made by hand.
To see the degree of attention and detail given to the tailoring, I invite you to discover the test of a G.Inglese shirt tested as part of the Beige Habilleur presentation .
9. Yeossal
Singaporean brand that we mostly talk to you about for pants, Yeossal also offers beautiful shirts for a price around €110/120.
10. Turnbull&Asser
The illustrious English house created in the 19th century has the Royal Warrant and offers very beautiful (and expensive) shirts in its ready-to-wear range.
11. Brooks Brothers
We owe the button-down collar shirt to the Brooks family.
The brand is historic but I regularly see comments reporting somewhat poor quality compared to the asking price.
It's still worth mentioning, and I would especially add that you will find reasonably priced models on Yoox !
