Why is fashion CYCLICAL? – Sapristi #9 Reading Our selection of brands of shirts with large button-down collars – CDL#71 Next I talked about watches with Serica Watches + test

I regularly receive questions about readers looking for shirts with a generous button-down collar:

It must be recognized that these shirts have a certain charm and fit well into formal outfits with more classic proportions :

And also more relaxed:

The fact that the collar rolls and undulates is particularly appreciated by connoisseurs:

blue white striped shirt

Benevento shirt.

The history of the button-down collar being intrinsically linked to that of the Oxford shirt, you will find a lot of Oxfords in this selection... and not only that!

If you haven't already done so, I invite you to watch the episode of VIRAL on this subject to find out everything about OCBD .

Before moving on to the selection, I would like to clarify two points:

1. How do you measure the height of a shirt collar?

Like this :

gray cotton shirt

2. What is a “grand pass”?

The current average collar height on the market is between 5 and 6cm.

Knowing that 6.5cm seems to me to be a good option to have something larger than average, but not too imposing either.

From 7cm, a collar can be considered generous.

To find out more about shirt collars, I invite you to read this article which will teach you in particular about the appropriate length of the collar for your head.

Entry level

It is difficult to find shirts with a slightly stronger style statement such as a fairly large button-down collar at the entry level.

However, here is what I can offer you.

1. Gutteridge

The Italian brand is rarely mentioned in our columns because it does not have a store in France and did not offer deliveries in France until recently.

Having gone to a brand store during a trip to Milan in 2019, I found the correct products for the price . To make a comparison, I'd say it's a little better than Massimo Dutti but below Suitsupply .

A good choice for a shirt as we are interested in here.

brown shirt with buttoned collar

Very beautiful color in brown tones here.

2. Field of Maneuvers

The French brand offers two button-down collar oxford shirts (white and sky blue) with a straight cut.

The collar is not very large but quite reasonable in size.

The fabric seems rather thick.

blue and white oxford shirt

Classic and effective.

Midrange

If you dig deeper, you can find many mid-range brands (around €100) offering beautiful shirts, with pretty button-down collars.

1. BD Baggies

BD Baggies is a historic American brand on button-down collar Oxford shirts, just like Brooks Brothers or Gitman Vintage which I talk about below.

The products are of honest quality but are not made in the United States.

In terms of French distributors, you can get BD Baggies at Beau Bien Store, Les Flâneurs and Elevation Store.

In Europe with delivery to France, look at Content Store London .

A yellow checkered seersucker.

7. Spier&Mckay

Spier&Mckay is a Canadian tailoring brand with a rather classic style, appreciated in particular by our colleagues at Parisian Gentleman .

The prices are affordable but the brand ships from Canada. Customs fees may apply for delivery to France.

The white oxford shirt with red stripes is also a classic model.

8. Suitsupply

The brand offers few button-down collar shirts but there are always two or three per season.

blue shirt popover

A denim popover. Why not.

9. Granqvist Store

Granqvist is a Swedish brand that I recently had the opportunity to mention in my nuggets .

It offers a nice range of oxford shirts, with stripes and slightly brighter colors.

blue white striped shirt

A 9.5cm long collar and a rather formal looking fabric: this shirt will go perfectly with a suit/tie set.

10. Poszetka

Good Polish sartorial, relatively accessible.

We offered you the test of a 3-piece suit.

The shirts look just fine to me.

blue buttoned shirt

An Italian fabric from Albini here. It rather inspires confidence.

11. Benevento

In France, the brand is distributed at Beau Bien Store.

In Europe with delivery to France, look at Mr.Porter, EndClothing, Frans Boone Store, Farfetch or Yoox .

11. Brooks Brothers

We owe the button-down collar shirt to the Brooks family.

The brand is historic but I regularly see comments reporting somewhat poor quality compared to the asking price.

It's still worth mentioning, and I would especially add that you will find reasonably priced models on Yoox !

blue button shirt

The "polo shirt", an original polo shirt.

David Hao, maximum soft tailoring

I think clothing can be a beautiful means of personal development. I like unstructured jackets, straight pants and loafers.
