Boat shoes, sandals and other summer matters – CDL #24

Chaussures bateaux, sandales et autres questions d’été – CDL #24

After offering you brands of summer pants, shirts and shirts two weeks ago, today I wanted to stay on this summer theme.

So we're going to talk about shoes to wear in hot weather... but not only that.

What do you think of boat shoes?

1. The question

2. My response

The boat shoe is divisive, has quite a connotation, but is not devoid of interest. It's actually a good alternative to moccasins:

  • Boat shoes have laces. This is useful if your foot tends to slip or your heel to come off in moccasins.
  • The rubber soles, sometimes even with studs, which equip boat shoes, offer good grip for trudging, whether in town or on rocks at the beach.

I like these Jules&Jenn boats in smooth brown leather, with leather laces and a rather thick lug sole, whose appearance is not too preppy and has an almost adventurous side.

You will also find boat shoes at:

  • Sperry , whose founder Paul A. Sperry created the boat shoe in 1935
  • Sebago , another iconic brand tested here
  • Velasca , which doesn't surprise me because this type of shoe is very much in the brand's DNA,
  • Astorflex . Yes, this brand which makes good big boots with a distinct style.

Boat shoes with workwear influences at Astorflex . I find them particularly successful, the ecru crepe sole responds very well to the beige suede of the upper. We thank Jordan for this recommendation.

“And how can I wear boat shoes?”

Like moccasins!

Chinos, a casual shirt rolled up, and there you have it!

They will also go perfectly with all your Bermuda shorts.

In their more elegant version, they can even be worn in slightly more formal outfits. Like here in a shell cordovan version with colorful socks and light pants:

To find out a little more, the subject was raised during the last live with Jordan and Nicolò (from 19min30s).

Any brand recommendations for sandals?

1. The question

2. My response

Here is my selection of brands:

A rather open sandal from Bleu de Chauffe.

  • currently on sale on their e-shop .
  • La Botte Gardiane , for the multiplicity of models offered. Closed, open, with strips of leather rather thin or thick, colors rather light or dark... there is something to do.
  • Steve Mono , whose sandals are distributed by Royal Cheese and therefore this laced suede leather model appeals to me:

Bold. This model is available at Royal Cheese.

As the almost 100 comments on this post on our Instagram account show, it is divisive.

Like the boat shoe, well chosen and well worn, the leather sandal deserves your attention.

Like the boat shoe, it fits easily with all your summer looks: Bermuda shorts or light pants.

If the prospect of showing your feet puts you off but you want to give it a try, go for rather closed sandals from the brands suggested above.

Can I wear high waisted pants with a t-shirt?

1. The question

2. My response

Yes, that sounds great to me. I find that in this configuration, it is more appropriate to wear the t-shirt tucked into the pants, to highlight the pants, and leave the t-shirt further back.

Above all, this allows us to offer a different (and differentiating) style for the summer:

  • With a clear separation between the top and bottom resulting in a visually shortened bust and elongated legs
  • A contrast of formalism between the very casual top and the bottom much more dressed .

Here is a very good example of such an outfit to support my point:

When writing his lines, I notice that many members of the team have this combination: Nicolò, Michel, Jordan... and me.

This is a silhouette that I proposed in my readers' letters episode on t-shirts :

It's not a white t-shirt nor blue or beige pants, but the spirit is there: pleated pants and t-shirt tucked into the pants.

Need more advice on how to wear high-waisted or natural-waisted pants? I can only encourage you to read the article that Jordan wrote on the subject.

What shirt to wear with a light suit?

1. The question

2. My response

Here is the costume in question.

As basic and essential as it is, a white shirt wouldn't really go with such a light suit. The outfit would be too light, forming only one light block from top to bottom, your silhouette being blurred at the torso, where you would expect to see contrast.

Fortunately, there are more than just white shirts in life.

Here are the suggestions you can try:

  • Any blue, light or dark, poplin, twill, oxford, chambray or denim shirt
  • Shirt in green or brown tones
  • Pale pink shirt to fully embrace a colorful summer style
