🎬🌴 #4 - Choose your Bermuda shorts wisely

🎬🌴 #4 - Bien choisir son bermuda

After Jordan's episode on swimming shorts, I take over to deal with the "terrestrial" side of the subject.

That is to say, I'm going to talk to you about shorts... But not about swimming!

... Yes, just the shorts.

And I can already see what some people will think:

"What about the shorts? But anyway, are there really useful things to know about such a simple piece?"

Well, I would answer three things to that.

The first is that we are going to talk more specifically about Bermuda shorts .

The second is that yes, there are many things to know about this piece... Starting with understanding the difference between shorts and Bermuda shorts .

And the third is that shorts (or Bermuda shorts) are not condemned to being an ultra-simple piece , bordering on bland. In summer, this room has a lot more potential than you might think.

Because in addition to existing in very varied styles, there are subtleties which mean that Bermuda shorts will suit one body type better than another.

Style and details

But let's start with the style!

In fact, there are two ways to process the part:

  • Either we say to ourselves “It’s really just an extra piece since they’re shorter pants”
And in which case, we go straight to the essential: simple Bermuda shorts, without frills, not very expensive, available in two or three colors, and that's it.
  • Either, we realize that, PRECISELY, since it's " like pants but shorter", then...
There are as many opportunities to have stylish Bermuda shorts as there are styles of pants!

By playing with elements such as pockets, belts and their closing styles, on clips or other details, you can vary your style palette enormously.

And fortunately, because in summer, we still have fewer options, so anything that varies a little is good to take.

The length

When we talk about the cut of Bermuda shorts, this is probably where we should start.

The right length firstly balances your physique. More specifically, it can change the appearance of your leg length : those on stilts will want to minimize it, while men with short legs will want to gain a little.

In any case, the right length for Bermuda shorts is somewhere between mid-thigh and just above the knee , and everyone will need to find the subtle balance that suits them best.

“How about shorter? Or longer?”

Well, in relation to what I wrote above: shorter, and it's shorts , longer and it's cropped pants .

But we will only talk about it very briefly because it is not our topic of the day. (And then, shorts are interesting, but cropped pants...)

Waist height

The second point to check on the cut of Bermuda shorts is the height of the waist.

It is an interesting element, because it can not only vary the style , but also the proportions of the other two cut elements: the higher the waist , the more you will want long and loose Bermuda shorts to balance it.

High-waisted Bermuda shorts by Scott Fraser Collection. Very cool visually, but I would advise not ONLY having this type of Bermuda shorts.

Another thing: a higher waist will give you greater comfort and mobility.

But in very hot weather, it also means having more skin covered by the fabric... And therefore a little less breathability.

Finally, since we are on the theme of "Fashion at the Beach", I will explain to you why the most rewarding waist height is not the same when you are dressed as when you are shirtless .

The volume and opening of the legs

Last critical point of the cut of Bermuda shorts: its volume in the thigh, and by extension, the leg opening.

As you can imagine, you should avoid Bermuda shorts that are too slim.

The classic beginner's mistake is to imagine that Bermuda shorts must be the same dimensions as pants that fit you well.

Why is this an error?

Because pants stop around your ankle. Whereas Bermuda shorts stop around your knee (or higher).

And a knee being much thicker than an ankle, in essence, the opening of Bermuda shorts is wider than that of pants.

It's that simple.

Besides, if you cut slim pants (that fit you well) above the knee, you would be surprised to see that they do not necessarily make good Bermuda shorts for you.

As an example: in my opinion, this is the "maximum acceptable slim fit" on Bermuda shorts:

The fabric does not tighten the thigh when it does not bend. Note that even if these Bermuda shorts are "slim", if we extended the leg, we would have pants with a "semi-slim" or "regular" cut.

And Bermuda shorts that fit you really well, if they were extended to the ankle, would perhaps result in pants that are too straight for your tastes.

Once this observation has been made, we can wonder how wide or tight this opening can be. It certainly depends on the morphology, but also largely on respecting the proportions with respect to the other measurements (length and waist height) of your Bermuda shorts.

The material

There are two schools when it comes to the fabric of a Bermuda short: the school of light, "shirt weight" fabric, and the school of heavier fabric.

One of the first Bermuda shorts we offered was in a “shirt weight”. We also made a popover shirt in the same material!

Both have their pros and cons, and I'll explain them to you.

The ideal Bermuda shorts in my opinion

To talk only about my personal taste: there are two types of Bermuda shorts that I really like, and that I wear often: the slightly chic chill Bermuda shorts "jogging type" with drawstring. With or without pliers!

I find the drawstring gimmick works with absolutely EVERYTHING in the casual summer context, and I still can't get enough of it. (At Frescobol Carricoa)

And the Bermuda shorts are really dressed in a military closure with a double strap, or Gurkha inspiration.
