🎬🌴#6 - FINALLY find the hat that suits you!

🎬🌴#6 - Trouvez ENFIN le chapeau qui vous va !

Article updated August 2022.

The sun will return. And when he gets there it's going to hit. Trust me.

Whatever happens, whether it is the case or not, there is one sentence that we no longer want to hear: "I don't have a head for hats!"

ENOUGH ! We are tired of hearing this sentence which prevents the person who says it from finding the hat that matches them. As in everything in clothing, it is a question of harmony, correspondence and balance between the design of an object and the morphology of a body.

Just because you haven't found it doesn't mean this hat doesn't exist!

MAAAAAAAAA I’m not just talking about hats either! Not just panamas, pork pie hats, trilbys, fedoras and so on. I'm also talking about caps and bucket hats.

Impossible to do otherwise. I'm interested in what goes on the head. And we can only see that we hardly wear hats these days, where we wear caps and bucket hats like never before. Myself, I have this fantasized, romantic and heroic vision of the man in the hat, although to cover myself on a daily basis, I prefer the cap.

More modest surely and more all-purpose, for sure. We wrote an article on this subject where each member of the team talks to you about their relationship with the cap.

Well no need to say more, you know the program for this episode. So I'll let you watch in peace. And yes ! There is an error in this video... can you tell me what it is?

Which cap for summer?

The first thing to do is find the right shape that suits you. And so try it! Soft or rounded, flat or rounded visor, newsboy, snapback, baseball, 5-sided, 6-sided and so on!

Okay, but I'll start with the easiest: favor natural materials. Cotton and linen for summer .

If the cap has synthetic, your head will sweat. Not pleasant. You may sweat with cotton and linen, but much less and it will be more pleasant.

In my opinion, the best choice of cap is an adjustable 6-panel with a non-flat visor. So a baseball cap. It’s the one that reaches out to the greatest number of people. Unlined, it's better for summer because it's lighter.

BonneGueule cap . This is the ideal shape for me.

Some prefer when the caps are more rigid and therefore lined. At this time, linen would be a good option for summer as it is more breathable than cotton.

What if we came to aesthetics?

Plains are a safe choice . For a first cap , beige is very versatile. Olive green too.

If you want a pattern, I recommend keeping it discreet and small in scale.

If you want to go further, seersucker is a good option for summer: light, embossed and often blue and white striped.

If you want a logo, I would say avoid big logos at all costs . If you want one, because the cap lends itself well, take a light one like here and there.

There you go, I think we're not bad there.

My personal picks for summer:

Berg&berg pink cap

LOOKS:

Here are two outfits that I find interesting:

A cap worn casually but a little chic. You don't need to be in a t-shirt to wear a cap, it's possible in a shirt too.

In a shirt and also in Bermuda shorts. Here you can replace the moccasins with Vans or any other minimalist sneakers.

Choose your bob carefully

The bob is a good option especially if your style is streetwear or just casual . It can be surprising at first, ridiculous or cheesy, but for some people, it's superb. No really. Stunning.

Same thing as the caps for the material.

Not all bobs will suit you. It depends on the depth of the crown, the width of the edges, the rigidity of the material, if the cap is rather square or round. No general advice other than this: try, try, try.

For the aesthetics of the bucket hat, what was valid on the cap is also valid here. Except for that, as it is quite a playful piece, we can let go more with the patterns. For example, I particularly liked this model from Noah and Barbour.

Noah x Barbour. Stunning ! But not for everyone.

Well it's for winter but you know what I mean.

My personal bucket hat picks for summer:

I particularly like the old Ivy bob with the border like this:

And I find the Norse Projects bobs always on point.

The looks!

Interesting look! The bob goes unnoticed. It echoes the shoes and matches in monochrome the jacket called a noragi.

The same process used with the same color for the last piece of the top, the bucket hat, and the last piece of the bottom, the sneakers. Perhaps an avenue to explore. The rest is beautiful.

How to choose the right hat?

General advice

I said in the introduction that there was a hat for every head. So how to find it? We're going to do it together.

First you should know that a hat is worn approximately 1 cm above the ears and eyebrows.

straw hat and patterned shirt

The hat is positioned well on the head here. (Hat Lock&Co )

If you already have hats, you can take the test and see which ones fit and which ones don't .

To choose the right size... well... you have to know it. There's some in there. And that means that you will have to measure your head circumference.

To do this, take a measuring tape. And turn your head around. The meter should be positioned about 1 cm above the eyebrows, ears and on the little bump on the back of the head that I'm sure you have. Just like a properly sized hat would.

Don't tighten too much!

You have your head size. This is usually between 54 and 62 cm. If you are between two sizes, you will need to take the larger one.

There you go, now you know. Let's move on to material and aesthetics.

Matter

straw close up white panama

Panama straw Borsalino

I will be brief. You want natural materials. It's much better in every way: for you, for the planet, for the beauty of the hat and because it's cooler than a plastic hat.

If you don't believe me, take the test.

So straw, hemp.

Aesthetic

The straw can have a very white or brown appearance and it can be dyed in the color you want.

It can even be braided from strands of different colors.

If it's an everyday hat you want, you might be better off sticking to cream colors that will go with everything.

In my opinion the whitest are the best dressed. It will be difficult to wear them in a very casual outfit. But not impossible.

Now there are all kinds of hat shapes:

  • Fedora or Borsalino : Hollow and pinched crown, wide stiff or soft edges
  • Panama : it must be made of straw, this is the main difference. That and the fact that its rear edge is often raised and its front edge lowered
  • Trilby : we talked about it in the introduction. The shape of Panama but with very narrow edges. And necessarily rear edge raised and front lowered
  • Boater : Flat, round crown and rigid edges.
  • Pork pie: I warn you against this one too. Very narrow and raised edges. Crown retracted and rounded.

Here are the main shapes for summer.

Now, which one to choose?

You'll have to try! You will have to think about the proportions of your hat and whether they match those of your face and your body shape.

Look at the width of the edges. Does it make you look like you have a small head? Or on the contrary that it is ready to explode?

Look at the height of the cap. Does it look like you're hiding something under your hat or that it sits as it should with a natural finish?

Looking at the shape of the crown, does it make your face appear rounder or more angular or does it balance well with it?

These are the right questions.

Then, if you have a casual style perhaps a hat whose weave is not very tight will be better for you. And also with edges that are not too rigid.

Conversely, if you prefer formal settings, perhaps it gives you a fairly fine weave and rather stiff edges.

I say maybe because they are not rules but paths to follow or not to follow depending on how you feel when you put a hat on your head.

Style

In fact, I think you have to be careful with hats. I gave the example of the summer trilby in the introduction. That doesn't mean it's the only one to be wary of.

Hats are powerful pieces, sometimes too powerful for one's own style and own good.

Don't you find, for example, that those who wear hats best are often old gentlemen? Yes, because they have always worn it and today they wear it as a matter of course, just like their watch, their shoes.

Over time they discovered which shape suited them best and their hat is no longer brand new, it has lived, it tells their story.

For example, if you want to wear a hat well, I think you need to work on your clothing style . A hat, worn with a badly ironed white t-shirt, shapeless shorts and flip-flops will not do anything good. The hat will be too heavy to wear and will unbalance the whole thing.

This is how to wear a summer hat. A cool shirt, high-waisted pants and loafers:

Another example with espadrilles:

Boater:

I especially love the boaters in dressy mismatched outfits. For a wedding for example. Like here for example. But I'm sure you can also wear it with a simple summer shirt, loose pants and sandals or moccasins.

My personal hat picks for summer

The best hat: the one you find in a small boutique on vacation:

The final word...

Don't necessarily start right away by wearing a majestic Panama hat ! It would be a bit like wanting to run a marathon without having run smaller distances first.

Also, if you're more jeans than pleated pants, start with a cap. Take it easy, it's going to be fine.

“Clothes are there to have fun, so have fun” is the phrase I say the most in my videos. Style is not a set of rules, it is a field of possibilities. You can wear anything, you just have to find your way!
