Article updated in August 2022.
The sun is coming back. And when it does, it's going to be hot. Trust me.
Whatever happens, whether it is the case or not, there is one phrase that we no longer want to hear: "I don't have a face for hats!"
ENOUGH! We are tired of hearing this phrase that prevents the person who says it from finding the hat that suits them. As in everything in clothing, it is a question of harmony, correspondence and balance between the design of an object and the morphology of a body.
Just because you haven't found it doesn't mean the hat doesn't exist!
BAAAAAY I'm not just talking about hats either! Not just panamas, pork pie hats, trilbys, fedoras and so on. I'm also talking about caps and bucket hats.
It's impossible to do otherwise. I'm interested in what goes on the head. And we can't help but notice that we hardly wear hats anymore these days, where we wear caps and bobs more than ever. I myself have this fantasy, romantic and heroic vision of the man in the hat, although to cover myself on a daily basis, I prefer the cap.
More modest for sure and more versatile, for sure. We wrote an article about it where each member of the team tells you about their relationship with the cap.
Well, no need to say more, you know the program for this episode. So I'll let you watch in peace. And YES! There is an error in this video... can you tell me which one?

Which cap for summer?
The first thing to do is to find the right shape that suits you. And so try some! Soft or rounded, flat or rounded visor, newsboy, snapback, baseball, 5-panel, 6-panel and so on!
Well, I'll start with the easiest: choose natural materials. Cotton and linen for summer .
If the cap has synthetic, you will sweat from the head. Not pleasant. You may sweat with cotton and linen but much less and it will be more pleasant.
In my opinion, the best choice of cap is an adjustable 6-panel with a non-flat visor. So a baseball cap. This is the one that suits the greatest number of people. Unlined, it is better for summer because it is lighter.
Some people prefer when the caps are stiffer and therefore lined. In this case, linen would be a good option for summer because it is more breathable than cotton.
What if we come to aesthetics?
Solids are a safe choice . For a first cap , beige is very versatile. Olive green too.
If you want a pattern, I recommend keeping it discreet and small in scale.
If you want to go further, seersucker is a good option for summer: lightweight, waffle-weave, and often striped in blue and white.
If you want a logo, I would say avoid big logos at all costs . If you want one, because the cap lends itself well to it, take a light one like here and there.
Well, I think we're not doing too badly there.
My personal picks for summer:
LOOKS:
Here are two outfits that I find interesting:
A cap worn in a casual but slightly chic way. No need to be in a t-shirt to wear a cap, it is possible with a shirt too.
In a shirt and also in Bermuda shorts. Here you can replace the loafers with Vans or any other minimalist sneakers.
Choosing the right bob
The bob is a good option especially if your style is streetwear or just casual . It can be surprising at first, ridiculous or corny but on some people's heads, it looks great. No really. Great.
Same as caps for the material.
Not all bobs will suit you. It depends on the depth of the crown, the width of the edges, the stiffness of the material, whether the hairstyle is more square or round. No general advice other than this: try, try, try.
For the aesthetics of the bob, what was valid on the cap is also valid here. Except, as it is a rather playful piece, we can let loose more on the patterns. For example, I particularly liked this model from Noah and Barbour.
Well it's for winter but you know what I mean.
My personal summer bob picks:
I especially like old Ivy bobs with the trim like this one:
And I always find the Norse Projects bobs to be spot on.
The looks!
Interesting look! The bob goes unnoticed. It echoes the shoes and matches in monochrome with the jacket called a noragi.
The same process used with the same color for the last piece of the top, the bob, and the last piece of the bottom, the sneakers. Maybe a path to explore. The rest is beautiful.
How to choose the right hat?
General advice
I said in the introduction that there is a hat for every head. So how do we find it? We're going to do it together.
First of all, you should know that a hat is worn about 1 cm above the ears and eyebrows.
If you already own hats, you can take the test and determine which ones fit and which ones don't .
To choose the right size... well... you have to know it. There's some in there. And that means you're going to have to measure your head circumference.
To do this, take a tape measure. And go around your head. The tape measure should be positioned about 1 cm above your eyebrows, ears and on the little bump at the back of your head that I'm sure you have. Like a hat that is the right size would do, basically.
Don't overtighten!
You have your head circumference. It is usually between 54 and 62 cm. If you are between two sizes, you will need to take the larger one.
There you have it, now you know. Let's move on to the material and aesthetics.
Matter
I'll be brief. You want natural materials. It's much better in every way: for you, for the planet, for the beauty of the hat and because it's less hot than a plastic hat.
If you don't believe me, take the test.
So straw, hemp.
Aesthetic
Straw can be very white to brown in appearance and can be dyed to any color you want.
It can even be braided from strands of different colors.
If it's an everyday hat you want, it might be best to stick to cream colors that will go with everything.
In my opinion, the whitest ones are the most dressed up. It will be difficult to wear them in a very casual outfit. But not impossible.
Now there are all kinds of hat shapes:
- Fedora or Borsalino : Hollowed and pinched crown, wide stiff or soft brim
- Panama : it is necessarily made of straw, that is the main difference. That and the fact that its back edge is often raised and its front edge lowered
- Trilby : we talked about it in the introduction. The shape of the Panama but with very narrow edges. And necessarily raised back edge and lowered front edge
- Boater : Flat, round crown and stiff brim.
- Pork pie: I would warn you against this one too. Very narrow and raised edges. Tucked in and domed crown.
So much for the main shapes for summer.
Now, which one to choose?
You'll have to try it! You'll have to think about the proportions of your hat and whether they match those of your face and your body shape.
Look at the width of the edges. Does it make you look like you have a small head? Or like it's ready to explode?
Look at the height of the crown. Does it look like you're hiding something under your hat or does it sit properly and look natural?
Looking at the shape of the crown, does it make your face appear rounder or more angular or does it balance well with it?
These are the right questions.
Then, if you have a casual style maybe a hat with a loose weave will be better for you. And also with not too stiff brims.
Conversely, if you prefer formal settings, perhaps he gives you a fairly fine weave and rather stiff edges.
I say maybe because these are not rules but paths to follow or not follow depending on what you feel when you put a hat on your head.
Style
Actually, I think you have to be careful with hats. I gave the example of the summer trilby in the introduction. That doesn't mean that's the only one you have to be wary of.
Hats are powerful pieces, sometimes too powerful for one's own style and good.
Don't you think, for example, that those who wear hats best are often old gentlemen? Yes, because they have always worn them and they wear them today as a matter of course, just like their watches and their shoes.
Over time they discovered what shape suited them best and their hat is no longer brand new, it has lived, it tells their story.
For example, if you want to wear a hat well, I think you have to work on your clothing style . A hat worn with a poorly ironed white t-shirt, shapeless shorts and flip-flops will not look good. The hat will be too heavy to wear and will unbalance the whole outfit.
Here's how to wear a summer hat. A cool shirt, high-waisted pants and loafers:
Another example with espadrilles:
Boater:
I particularly like boaters in dressy mismatched outfits. For a wedding for example. Like here for example. But I'm sure you can also wear it with a simple summer shirt, loose pants and sandals or loafers.

The final word...
Don't necessarily start by wearing a majestic panama hat right away ! It would be a bit like wanting to run a marathon without having run shorter distances first.
Also, if you are more jeans than pleated pants, start with a cap. Take it easy, it will go well.
