Test: Hast brand shirts

Test : les chemises de la marque Hast

Hast is a young brand of classic men's shirts with a very simple promise: to make very good shirts for a very competitive price , namely €54 (there are two models at €59).

The brand is primarily aimed at those who have to wear a shirt every day and who struggle to find a simple, nice, well-cut and inexpensive shirt.

The least we can say is that the simplicity of the offer is matched only by its effectiveness. All the classic men's wardrobe shirts are here : the basic white shirt, the basic blue shirt, the basic blue striped shirt (with several types of stripes), the basic checkered shirt, etc.

For now, we can't blame Hast for being burdened with vague and pompous marketing, because everything is very clear... basic.

The overall design of the Hast shirt

As soon as I unbox the shirt, I immediately notice the distinguished collar work , which is a semi-cutaway apparently exclusive to the brand. It is clear that it is very nice: neither too young, nor too classic, nor too austere. And it looks good without a tie and with a jacket .

Hast Shirt Collar

A worked collar that I really like.

Yann Barthès Hast shirt

Yann Barthès and his Hast shirt: I approve.

But a classic shirt remains a classic shirt. In this case, Hast shirts are only intended to be worn tucked into pants (they are long and that's fine: so much the better if that encourages you to discover casual shirts ).

As for the material, it is frankly qualitative (double twisted cotton, therefore silkier than a classic poplin), it has nothing to do with the cheap fabrics that you can find on shirts at an equivalent price.

Plus they also have pin-ups, although
we do not get our supplies on the same continent.

But why did you take a men's shirt with red stripes?

I simply wanted to try! More seriously, I already had a shirt with blue stripes, I didn't want to have duplicates... And the stripes are fine, and the background is white, so nothing too complicated to match.

The finishes of the shirt

For a shirt costing €54, they are quite good ! Obviously, no mother-of-pearl buttons, nor 7 stitches per centimeter (although there are 6 stitches per centimeter, which is not bad at all considering the price), but everything is overall very clean, regular and neat . Nothing sticks out, and I was pleasantly surprised by the very precise buttonholes.

I was also delighted to see that the buttons are sewn using cross stitch , a much more robust method than classic sewing (the one we usually see, where the button is sewn with two parallel rows of thread).

For a shirt costing €54, the buttonhole is extremely successful!

The finishes are so good that I strongly suspect Hast uses a workshop usually working for much more high-end brands...

The cut of the Hast shirt

It’s a nice surprise! Honestly, I tried shirts! And most of the time, the cheaper the shirt, the more compromises are made on the quality of the fit. But not this time. Finally a very well cut shirt at a fair price.

For my body type, the cut is very well made . The size chart is well done, and I knew I had to take a 37. I often have trouble finding shirts with the correct sleeve length, here everything is perfect, and the shoulder falls right where it's necessary. The sleeves do not gape under the armpits: the armhole is high. The cut is decidedly “young” (no parachute under the arms).

Hast shirt

An effective cut considering the price.
No unnecessary volume at the bust level and no tight-fitting parts, it's perfect
(and thank you for your encouragement regarding my obsession with photo shoots).

Hast shirt collar

Nothing to say about the shoulder, which is very good.

Be careful though, the sizing is a bit particular , knowing that in a shirt, I'm more of a 38-39... I therefore advise you to look carefully at the size table, to make your choice using the measurements of a shirt that fits you perfectly.

The most important thing is the length of the sleeves and the shoulders . If there is a little volume at the bust level, it's not serious, it can be touched up very easily. I say that, because the curve is perfectly adapted to a standard body shape. Very slender people are warned...

But for this price, it's clearly one of the best cut shirts I've worn !

So, what do you think in the end?

It’s a very nice surprise! I highly recommend the brand for anyone who needs to wear a lot of shirts every day (professions requiring the wearing of a suit). It quickly becomes expensive to dress well when you have a job where the shirt is a "consumable", just like underwear or socks.

Because there is nothing more frustrating to see that a shirt in which you have invested a little money becomes deformed after 4 or 5 washes (not to mention the "soft collar" effect), or the work at lunch break.

If the shirt is your uniform for the week, there is no point spending a lot of money on it (even if you are careful, the shirt will quickly fall apart given the number of washes you give it). On the other hand, if you wear the shirt occasionally, or are looking for something to go out with: invest in top-of-the-range clothing.

With Hast , we will still remain in the first case.

In short, you have here a good everyday shirt, just like Dany Berd who is also very well priced (if we put aside the sellers who sell you the shirt like they would sell you a fish).

Difficult to find better for the price , which is very reasonable (some brands sell the same quality for twice as much). Whether it is a student looking for a shirt for oral exams, or someone for whom the shirt is a consumable item because it is worn 5 days a week, it is an excellent alternative to what is usually found in this price range.
