Tips: How to wear a shirt? In or out?

Conseils : Comment porter une chemise ? Rentrée ou sortie ?

Shirt in the pants or shirt out of the pants? How to wear a men's shirt? Quite a question, but the answer is rather simple. It really depends on the length of the shirt. In this article you will learn to distinguish a shirt to wear "shirt in the pants" and a shirt to wear "shirt out of the pants"... To finally know how to wear it

It all starts with a question about the shirt...

Here is a little letter from readers, delivered at cornflake time, as it should be.

Good evening Geoffrey! Thank you for your previous advice, which I have also applied and which serves me well on a daily basis to make my sets.

I'm turning to you today because I realize that I never really knew how to wear a shirt tucked into jeans. I don't know where the problem is, if it's my body that's misshapen (I've gained weight recently so I have very slight hips), if it's my jeans that aren't suitable, if it's my shirts that aren't, or if it's a mix of these three elements.

In fact, when I tuck in the shirt, I feel like my pants are way too high, my bust is way too small and it's super ugly. Either the shirt wrinkles or it gapes: it's ugly.

I tried to slip the shirt into the boxers, in fact these problems of wrinkling and loose shirts are almost solved, but this problem of the bust and the pants being too high: it really makes it look too unattractive.

What do you advise ? Change body? Shirt? Pants? Technical? All ?

Thanking you in advance for all your advice, any criticism is welcome. I'm getting to the point of no longer wearing a tucked-in evening shirt, or a simple shirt under a blazer, replacing it with a simple plain t-shirt, it's getting dramatic :/

Respectfully

Nicholas

Hello Nicolas,

We sometimes find ourselves overthinking . Reading you, we can sense that you want to put your look under control. It's normal, you are assimilating a lot of information, sometimes contradictory: and what you need, above all, is a few simple points of reference.

All this to tell you that your question is worth asking:

How do I wear my shirt? In or out?

Your body shape has little to do with whether you wear your shirt tucked in or out of your pants, that's not what matters here (unless you really have very small legs or a very small bust).

Once the main principles are in mind (and in particular the difference between business and casual shirts), let's talk about how to wear them.

You can also reread our article on how to choose a shirt .

BUSINESS SHIRTS

Business shirts are generally made to be worn with a suit. In theory, they are made to be tucked into pants, because they are longer.

If you are not satisfied with your silhouette, putting on a blazer over it helps hide the pants/shirt demarcation.

Practical tip: a business shirt combined with wool pants (like those in suits) or chinos also works very well. Little extra, you can roll up the sleeves for more relaxation.

CASUAL SHIRTS

Casual shirts are often too short to be worn under pants. Conversely, if we choose them too long, it’s a disaster.

To wear a shirt over pants, you must therefore choose a sufficiently short casual shirt. Also make sure that the pants and shoes you choose go well with the shirt you choose.

I'm going to wear my shirt out of my pants... but open or closed?

It's a question of taste. It all depends on the context and the clothing chosen.

There is an almost infallible technique: for a casual look, combine the open shirt with a t-shirt underneath. It's simple to do, and the results are often very satisfying.

This is a good way to wear a shirt that is apparently too long without it lengthening the bust and shortening the legs: it is the limit of the t-shirt which defines the torso/pelvis limit.

In a more formal setting, it is highly recommended to keep your shirt closed . You can open it with one button (two maximum!), slightly fold the sleeves, but the serious and sober nature of the business shirt will prevent you from wearing it completely casually. Each garment has its own use.

Not forgetting our own shirts...

If you're looking for shirts cut from fabrics that tell a story , then we might just get along!

We went to find traditional chambrays in Japan, flannel in the Vosges, Oxford in Alsace, and seersucker in Italy. Smooth and sad fabrics like rain, no thank you.
