Today is Friday, and who says “Friday” says new episode of (Very) Well Dressed.
Personally, I find that pants and shoes are the pieces that most set the tone for your outfit.
This does not necessarily mean that these are the “master” pieces, but it is on their assembly that the coherence of your style depends most.
1. PIECES THAT SET THE TONE
Honestly... The biggest style hiccups always happen when the shoes have nothing to do with the pants. The tops are more permissive.
So today, we're going to take several styles of pants , and we're going to try to see what types of shoes they go with.
Of course, volumes, shape and cut are important for visual balance.
But what is particularly important for these two pieces is to succeed in creating a “link” between them, through the worlds to which they refer and their aesthetic common points.
2. WITH A CARGO
We start with a very distinctive piece , precisely because it will give you a glaring example to see that in fact, not all pants go with all pumps.
Cargo Orslow , Malfroid shoes. Just what is needed to successfully add a touch of elegance to this raw cargo.
We obviously expect something rougher, something tougher but... There are also more refined cargo ships that don't just call for big shoes made for trampling.
This nuance affects the choice of shoe, and we will find this principle for other pants: when they are "twisted", the ideal shoe to wear them also has a "twist" which follows the same direction.
3.WITH JOGGERS
Joggers are “sneakers and that’s it!” .
Well, okay, not always, but almost!
If we can imagine it very "street" and "sporty" at first glance, we know that there is no shortage of slightly chic variants in recent years. And there too, the level of “streetism” or “chicquism” of the shoe will follow!
4. WITH MATCHED DRESS PANTS
The answer is rather easy: classic shoes, in smooth leather or suede.
But so-called “suited” pants are very rich in variety, and “classic” shoes are full of small iterations, which ultimately result in styles that are not so homogeneous after all.
Claudio Mariani white corduroy and suede Chelsea pants with BonneGueule crepe sole. A classic and elegant base, but a casual "twist" for both pieces.
5. WITH JEANS
Trick question , what shoes do you wear with jeans?
Clothing history nerds might point out to me without thinking "cowboy or work boots, that's where it came from in the first place!"
Except that in practice, jeans have been the most common pants of our era for so long... It doesn't work like that.
The great strength of jeans is that they can completely change their “meaning” depending on their fabric, their cut, and the shoes that accompany them.
6. WITH A CHINO
Another very common piece, and consequently, the answer is also less clear-cut than for very “typical” pants.
Where jeans tend to be worn by shoes, chinos are sometimes misleading , because they are not as neutral as that: this word includes many pants which ultimately only have in common that they are not jeans. , and not having any striking details like cargo pockets, a drawstring...
In short, depending on its cut, its material, or its details, the world of shoes to choose will be much more similar to those worn with cargo pants or, on the contrary, dress pants...
By the way ! If you want to explore the question of pants style in more detail, I advise you to take a look at this article where I list the different styles of pants "closures" , and the brands where to find them 😉
