Style: How to Transition from Winter to Spring

Style : comment faire la transition entre l’hiver et le printemps
How to adapt your style mid-season and prepare your wardrobe for the arrival of sunny days? We give you our tips and advice to go from winter to spring with style.

Here you are. The time of year when getting dressed becomes as complicated as solving a Rubik's cube.

To begin with, you have to deal with the weather : it's chilly in the morning and muggy in the afternoon, the blue sky turns stormy in the blink of an eye, and a surprise downpour can hide behind a ray of sunshine.

But that's not all! There is also this desire, this almost animal need, for renewal. Hibernation is over - make way for the flowering of your style . It's time to say goodbye, once and for all, to the gloom of winter (at least until next year). The time has come to add a little lightness and joy to your daily life. And as is often the case, clothing is the ideal tool. But here's the thing: how to do it?

Mid-season is a kind of style purgatory where you don't really know what to wear anymore. So, to help you make a smooth transition from winter to spring , we've put together a list of tips. We've also picked up a few tips from Antoine, a stylist at Bonnegueule - he's the one who created the oh-so-springy outfits in our lookbook shot in Marseille .

Colors, materials, silhouettes and pieces: we tell you everything.

1 - Play with layering

Do you know about layering? Behind this anglicism lies a very practical technique for mid-season : the superposition of several layers of clothing (at least three). Try it and adopt it, as its advantages are numerous.

The first advantage of layering is thermal : it allows you to stay warm while still allowing you to easily remove (or put back on) layers depending on the various temperature differences - which is not the case with an outfit of only two layers composed, for example, of a thick sweater and a big coat.

It is also a very interesting aesthetic choice: the idea is not to accumulate layers on top of each other, but rather to make them visible in order to create contrasts of colors, materials and volumes . Enough to bring richness to an outfit.

The shirt

To try layering, our stylist Antoine recommends going for a shirt . According to him, it is the ideal piece for practical and successful layering.

"I wear a lot more shirts in the spring," he emphasizes. "I wear them closed in a classic way but also open, like overshirts - with a t-shirt underneath for example. The trick is not to choose them too tight! Mine are always a little oversized, in order to have nice volume and fluidity."

A formula that works very well? "A white t-shirt, an open dark shirt and a Noragi with a nice texture, like our Kansai model ," assures Antoine.

Mid-season jackets

Layering also allows you to start taking out your lighter jackets , even when temperatures are still low. There are as many as there are styles: everyone has their own. " The mid-season jacket is a versatile and practical piece to deal with temperature differences over the course of a single day," according to Antoine.

Which one to turn to? Classic and timeless, the denim jacket is a choice piece , since it goes with everything. Our stylist's advice: "Here, you should not create a layering with a piece that is too thick underneath, but rather add a layer on top , like a mac or trench coat, to remove if necessary during the day."

Another even more original and daring option that we told you about a little earlier: the Noragi jacket, inspired by a traditional Japanese garment . For Antoine, who is wearing our new Kansai model in these photos, "it's a piece that can be easily combined with others".

2 - Think "lightness"

When it comes to tops, it's time to trade in your bulkier pieces for lighter alternatives . Fold your chunky knits wisely and start bringing out your shirts if, as we said above, you're feeling layered.

If you're not yet comfortable with layering, bet on THE ideal transitional piece: the sweatshirt (and its hooded cousin, the hoodie)! Comfortable and casual , it works very well under a coat or a mid-season jacket (if it's not too tight), during the cooler months. And since it's a versatile piece, the sweatshirt is enough on its own and can be worn alone when the temperatures are milder.

On the bottom side, put your thick flannel pants in the closet and switch to cotton and/or linen ones. "It's time to treat yourself by getting out your chinos, jeans or cargo pants," says Antoine.

What about velvet? "For me, it's not a deal breaker in spring - quite the opposite! You just have to make sure that you choose a velvet that's fairly light and supple," Antoine.

3 - Dare to use seasonal colors

Let's be clear: just because winter is coming to an end doesn't mean you have to stop wearing navy blue, gray, or other more classic dark colors . However, it would be a shame not to take advantage of the arrival of spring to dare to wear more joyful, fresh, and soft colors. If nature is adorned with deep green, mimosa yellow, or even soft pink... frankly, nothing is stopping you from doing the same .

Still in keeping with the idea of a transitional wardrobe , start by mixing more "winter" shades with shades considered more "springy". Go little by little . If you don't know where to start, just concoct your usual outfit but swap a dark top for a pastel top . This will bring a touch of cheerfulness to your looks, without it being too radical.

"It's time to switch to spring colours," confirms Antoine, a green aficionado . "I wear a lot of green - a beautiful bright green makes a difference right away. But there's also lichen green, sage green... Don't hesitate to play with slightly bolder colours like pink, mauve, yellow..."

Want to add some light and softness to your looks , but aren't ready to wear bold colors? Beige, a very neutral shade, is an easy shade to wear at this time of year. "It pairs very well with white but also, once again, with green," Antoine tells us.

4 - Swap blue jeans for white jeans

Spring means the return of sun and light, after months spent in the dark days of winter. And your outfits can also reflect this renewal. For that, what if you switched to white jeans? At BonneGueule, we are fans - we told you last year why we love them so much and how to wear them, right here .

More versatile and easy to wear than you might think, white jeans have the advantage of bringing a touch of light to a look, while keeping the authentic look that we love about denim .

It's a "go-anywhere" bottom that automatically highlights the rest of an outfit and allows you to dare to wear stronger pieces on top, for example. It also allows you to have fun with color combinations , and works very well with... frankly, all shades. For spring, wear it with old pink, brown or even sage green: you'll see, it's divine .

5 - Don't forget the shoes

After having gone through the winter cold in big thick leather boots, what if you offered something different to your feet? Spring is the occasion, if the weather permits, to start bringing out your suede or leather shoes (like Antoine did in these photos with his Clarks Wallabees), but also your cotton tennis shoes like Converses.

"Visually, it gives a less heavy effect than big leather shoes - we immediately project ourselves into spring ," says our stylist.

"And again, you can go for a little more original colors," he adds. "It works well on desert boots, but also on sneakers! If you like simplicity with a twist, a basic look composed of a white tee and straight jeans will work very well with a pair of colorful shoes."

On the other hand, don't put away your slightly more wintery pairs just yet : you'll need them for rainy and/or cooler days. Some pairs, like brogues or black derbies, can also create an interesting contrast with lighter, spring-like clothes . "I don't mind wearing my Dr. Martens even in spring," confirms Antoine, who even pairs them with his denim shorts.

In summary

To summarize, here are the elements to keep in mind for your stylistic transition at the start of spring:

  • layering, thermal and aesthetic
  • white denim, to add light
  • spring colors
  • lighter and more fluid materials
  • mid-season jackets
