We continue our summer series “Fashion at the beach” with espadrilles. And how can we talk about summer without talking about espadrilles? It's a must-have shoe in summer, if only for its unique style.
These shoes have a few advantages to offer:
- Since they are made of canvas, they are very breathable, and you never get too hot with them,
- They are very versatile, relaxed,
- And you can wear them with everything, remember that I'm a big fan of the espadrille and blazer outfit in summer.
On the downside, it's not a shoe made for the rain, which is a shame for an emblematic shoe of the Basque Country !
So you absolutely must avoid putting them in the washing machine or walking in the rain.
And for comfort, personally, I find that the interior rope can sometimes be irritating to the foot after a good day of walking.
But I find its undeniable breathability and its style make it an inseparable type of shoe from summer.
How to choose an espadrille?
The espadrille is the shoe for holidays, sun, relaxation, I find it a shame to choose an ultra ordinary color.
So don't hesitate to choose a more original color than usual, or patterns, there's no shortage of choice.
So red, orange, stripes, pastel blue, treat yourself!
What about wear and tear then?
So yes indeed, a pair of espadrilles wear out faster than a pair of sneakers.
My advice is simple: as it's an inexpensive shoe, you can afford to have several pairs, bring two or three in your suitcase, and that will drastically reduce their wear.
Among the details I care about are:
- The musette toe, this set of seams at the front of the foot. It seems that it is a more aesthetic detail than anything else but for me it protects the front of the espadrille and gives more soul
- Hand sewing on the sides, like at Don Quichosse, always with the idea of having a product with personality and craftsmanship,
- And I like it when the insole is covered in leather, at least on the heel. And if it's all over the inside of the foot, like Escadrille, it's even better,
- In terms of material, there is obviously cotton canvas in all possible colors, it is the default choice for a first espadrille,
- Afterwards, if you want something a little more luxurious, you have leather espadrilles, mainly in suede leather, to wear more occasionally to limit wear.
The espadrilles brands we love
- Escadrilles , the brand that took the espadrille to another level. I have had a pair since 2019 and I was very impressed by the comfort, you can wear them for a whole day without having that feeling of having your foot “grated” by the rope like a classic espadrille. Thanks to the full leather insole, foam cushioning, and differentiated right and left feet. I liked the product so much that we made it into a collaboration .
- Don Quichosse , a bit of the flagship of the espadrille of the French Basque Country, which is capable of offering very creative choices.
- Nicole Paries. This is a recommendation from my mother who is pure Basque, so you always have to trust local recipes. And what's more, they are quite creative.
Outfits with espadrilles
Ginga Ayuha #1
I really like the very, very chill touch that the espadrilles bring to this outfit, and the very nice Camoshita shirt. And with white pants, it's perfect.
Ginga Ayuha #2
I've always said it, with a suit, espadrilles are unexpected but they work very well and they carry the suit into other universes.
Nicolas Radano
Here is a rather unexpected mix with the military shorts but which works really well. The colors are very simple, but it's the quality of the pieces that gives this outfit incredible charm.
