I love fashion.
I love when a fabric shaped in a certain way drapes the body in a certain way.
I love when a person ingeniously uses this drape to shape their silhouette. It's a second chance, clothing, to create a new body.
But I don't just like fashion for that. I love it too, and I'm pushing an open door here, because it allows everyone to express a particular taste, to make a particular voice heard, without speaking.
And I say it: all voices interest me! All sensibilities interest me!
Whether it's that of the goth with a dog collar bristling with spikes, the high school student who customizes his AirForce One with a marker, the fifty-year-old who discovers that he can wear color, the little old man who has always dressed the same for 50 years because 'he's always done it like that and there's no reason for it to change today...
This voice that speaks interests and inspires me as such . I don't care where it comes from. As a man, I think we have a lot to learn from women's stylistic freedom.
In short, all that to tell you that I wanted to offer you a week of outfits inspired by inspiring women. And, just for fun and to close this introduction, I will quote Boris Vian in his poem I would not die:
"I don't want to die (...),
Before trying,
To wear a dress,
On the grand boulevards."
Monday - Camille Rowe
To start the week in style.
I came across this video where Camille Rowe showed Vogue outfits she liked to wear . And I was struck by the accuracy of her style, typically it-girl like Alexa Chung. So, casually, a style also shaped by what magazines expect from an it-girl . But I also found good taste and effortless audacity there.
In short, something quite enviable I find. Finally, I envy him.
In one way or another all the looks from her week speak to me. But it’s the one on Tuesday that inspires me the most. The photo above doesn't most accurately reflect the look of the video but we come pretty close. There is the same Riviera , Italian or French vibration.
I would like to wear this kind of costume without it being for a special occasion. Just like that. Or for an ordinary evening. I notice his jacket and pants are mismatched and maybe that makes it more natural.
A white suit for a man is a pain in the ass. Really. Unless you make it a stylistic signature like Tom Wolfe , and then again. But I don't want to have the same rendering as the writer. I want to wear it cool with loafers. I don't want the tie and the pin shirt.
This could give:
- An off-white Edward Sexton jacket with the characteristic lapels of the suit (but for that, I have to win the Lotto), so otherwise there is Vinted and the Lardini brand was able to make similar jackets.
- The bottom, to be chosen according to the color of the jacket because it is the latter which would be the most difficult to find
- Black GH Bass moccasins
- A belt with a golden buckle La Perruque
- A cool vintage t-shirt with a print like you find at Le Vif for example
Tuesday - Become a human blanket
This is going to go quickly: I think we should no longer go out with a blanket as a cape. I think it's superb when it's done well. I also tried it:
For example, you can find throws at Johnston of Elgin , Atelier Particulier , Begg&Co
Wednesday - A little nature at home
It's important to have Instagrammable work from home outfits. I don't know why it is but it is. Well, maybe it's not. But is that a reason not to do it?
This outfit is based on fluidity, drape, the play of materials and colors. So yes, she wears some sort of suspenders made from the same fabric as the pants, yes her leg opening must be close to forty centimeters flat but that's not the important thing.
The silhouette is beautiful, that's all. It's like looking at an enigmatic painting. I feel mesmerized by this outfit and I would love to wear this kind of thing every day when I don't leave the house.
Even though I could go out with it, no problem.
Already, the first key is to choose hemp, linen, cotton, in short, natural and naturally textured materials.
It would look like this:
- A t-shirt in a pastel color, yellow why not from Good On or Tezomeya
- A cotton officer collar shirt in a medium color (this pink is perfect), you can find it at Officine Générale (more in summer), or create it with Swann&Oscar or Cotton Society
- A flowing and wide chino. Corduroy for winter and crisp linen or hemp or cotton for summer. Studio Nicholson , Olive Clothing , Document , TS(S) , Oliver Spencer …
- RoToTo socks
- Lane45 cotton jacket:
Thursday - Color
I follow this woman for a simple reason: she makes me see colors in a different way. And again here, it's quite discreet, please believe me!
But who would have the idea of combining yellow and pink? Eh ? WHO ? Well, the association is perhaps made easier by the blondeness of her hair which is a sort of reminder and better integrates the color into her outfit. But let’s move on!
This outfit is easy to duplicate:
- A pink sleeveless vest to find on Vinted ( Éric Bompard , William Lockie, Drake's for example)
- Your favorite white t-shirt
- Trousers (five pockets or not, straight or not) in medium brown corduroy are important. For my part, it would be my Big John seen here:
- White sneakers: Vans , Converse , Doek or Asahi
- A patterned mac, to be found in thrift stores, on Vinted, Leboncoin or Vestiaire Collective. Keywords: Aquascutum , Grenfell
- A mustard yellow accessory
Friday - Winter White
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK, maybe I have a thing about all white. I do not know why. But can you imagine lugging around like that in the winter? Rolala what a pleasure!
I don't think there's anything I like better than white in winter. Well, to be honest, I could list dozens of things that I like better, starting with the gentle heat of the hairdryer when it's raining outside, or a good raclette with friends, or seeing Mom again, I missed the plane wrapped in a blanket with a hot chocolate.
But let's just say there's something exquisite about wearing white in winter. Because we're not expecting him there. Common mortals wear black and you, angel fallen from heaven, appear dressed in white. Is he crazy? Does he know something that others don't? Where is he from ? Could this be the man of my life?
See how you can go from an outfit to a destiny, just like that.
This is how I would do it:
- An off-white turtleneck in merino wool, like this Homecore for example (but for my part I'm going to use my Uniqlo bought years ago and which I put under my winter length shirts):
- A white wool or cotton flannel overshirt... And here, I admit that this season it's difficult to find. Well, I mean, exactly as I want, with this camp collar. Usually, you can find them at Universal Works , but not this year.
- Loose pants, found at Studio Nicholson , Olive Clothing , Document , TS(S) , Oliver Spencer , Officine Générale …
- White socks which you will have to find the right shade to match the pants and shoes. Not easy to find…
- White derbies, for example these:
Saturday: dress as you are
I think it's especially the pants that catch my eye.
Ugh, no I would be lying if I said that, everything in this outfit caught my eye : the use of colors, the scarf covering the hair like Audrey Hepburn wanting to go incognito, the materials of the pants and the coat, the particular color of the coat itself, these glasses which are both common and original, even the boots that I don't like are perfect here.
It's the kind of outfit that shows what it takes when you push personal expression very far and you no longer think so much rationally but let yourself be carried away by your stylistic freedom, as I wrote in introduction. And it feels great to see that. Above all, it is very well done.
I don't think it would be relevant to find equivalent clothing because that's not the point. But I still regularly look for embroidered Ralph Lauren pants on Vinted.
Sunday: Take a different walk
We end the week with an outfit for country walks. And it was in The Crown that I saw her. I loved this outfit from Claire Foy who plays Queen Elizabeth II. Mainly one thing: the combination of a Barbour with a silk scarf.
This is something I already do but will continue to do. Of course, I don't wear it on my head, but around my neck. To adapt the Queen's outfit to your walk, I suggest:
- A Barbour Beaufort found on Vinted or elsewhere
- I find my scarves at thrift stores. At Kiliwatch in Paris, for example, there are large baskets with lots of silk scarves… or not. You have to open your eyes and caress the material otherwise, you quickly find yourself buying polyester.
- To complete the outfit, I would say a crew neck in a suitable color, denim and sturdy shoes.
So.
I believe the main message of this article is that in matters of style as in everything, we must not look at the world with blinders, not just look where we are told to look, but take a step back and draw your own conclusions.
