Dear friends, here is the 8th episode of (Très) Bien Habillé, the weekly video to look good! Today we are going to talk about the length of the pants.
It's the first thing you see when you put on new pants: are they too short? Too long ? This simple fact can make or break the success of an outfit . It is one of the most basic notions of well-mastered style, and yet it contains many more nuances than one might think at first glance.
We will therefore see if there is a "good universal length" , in which case and why pants get shorter, when does fashion make them longer, and even the role that socks play (no joke) in all this !
Is there such a thing as a good pant length?
Not really... But I still have a proposition to make to you that will suit 90% of people for 90% of pants.
Once you have this "default" method, we will be able to see in which cases other lengths are more relevant, and what other elements of your outfits count in deciding this.
Why is fashion making pants shorter?
No, it's not just the pure whim of fashion changing for no reason . I'll give you two clues: it's a story of volumes , and a story of shoes.
If fashion changes the lengths of pants, the lengths of pants change fashion in return . It works both ways. If tomorrow, suddenly, pants became on average 5cm longer for all men, the shoe market would be transformed.
The question of socks
Yes, of course! Who says “shorter pants” says “visible socks”. When socks began to be revealed, our relationship to their style changed.
When should you make it longer?
Once you understand the logic of what made pants shorter... Just apply it the other way around. If you've always wondered how "bell-bottom" pants were popular in the 70s, you'll have the answer.
Good viewing.
PS: I wear:
- A Shiraya shirt from BonneGueule
