It was this comment from last week that inspired me to write this topic. I liked the idea of the “ cardigan that isn’t a cardigan ”:
If you are looking for a shawl collar cardigan, click here .
Here are the ideas I suggest:
1. The wool workwear jacket
You don't necessarily have to go with a knit (knit): a wool (fabric) jacket with a slight workwear feel is a good option.
Such a jacket has the advantage of being quite warm and easily used as layering, over a simple shirt, a t-shirt+sweater or shirt+sweater combo.
Here are the brands offering this type of product:
- Albam

A Harris Tweed with character.
-
Field of Maneuvers
The jacket is lined for greater comfort.
- COS

A pretty successful two-tone jacket in dark tones

2. The overshirt
There are all kinds of overshirts.
To give a broad definition, I would say that an overshirt corresponds to any garment with a shirt shape that can be worn as a second layer.
Mid-weight overshirts
So, some medium-weight shirts can be used as an overshirt. I'm thinking of a simple cotton flannel shirt for example, which can be worn alone as well as over a t-shirt or a thin sweater.
The idea here is that the garment should be casual: there is no question of using a formal shirt as an overshirt.

Typical example of a shirt that can be worn alone or with a t-shirt or sweater underneath.Portuguese Flannel
On the other hand, it won't necessarily go well with another shirt underneath, because the two garments will be a little too close.
Thick overshirts
They are always intended to be worn as a second layer . If you try to wear them alone, next to your skin, you will think that something is wrong.
These thicker overshirts can be paired with a more classic shirt. The difference in thickness is more marked, which makes it possible to better differentiate the two pieces.
These pieces can almost be seen as "mini-jackets".

This olive green overshirt is thick enough to look cohesive over a classic, thinner shirt.
No matter what type of overshirt you're looking for, it can be found everywhere, at every price point.

3. The blazer
Why not just a blazer?
There is something for all seasons and at all prices.
And if you fear an overly marked “suit jacket” look, know that you will find blazers that are rather warm and have a casual style (very visual material, light padding on the shoulders).
Here are some examples :

A pretty Shetland wool jacket with a houndstooth pattern

A stronger style proposition . Warmth, comfort and elegance are there.

4. The knitted jacket
Even more casual than the blazer: the knitted jacket, also sometimes called a “Milano jacket”.
It has a blazer shape (lapels, 2 or 3 button closure), but, as a knit, does not have interlining, padding or lining.
It's an interesting product because it's more casual than a blazer but more dressy than a cardigan.

Here is my selection of brands:

- Massimo Dutti

The brand offers double-breasted knit jackets .

A jacket looks very comforting. Wool and cashmere.
5. The trucker vest
It is a knit with a high collar and closes with a zip. It's a credible substitute for the cardigan.
At the brand level:

A simple and refined model.

A welcome camel color for winter.

A thick material, A beautiful piece.
6. The thick buttoned vest
Finally, in the same vein, you can look at cardigans buttoned up to the neck.
I am thinking first of all of the Stark model from SNS Herning , which we had the opportunity to test .
