Care frequency, methods to prevent shrinking or, on the contrary, excessive stretching: follow our guide to make your Bonnegueule knitwear (sweaters, cardigans) last a long time.
Hand Wash
All our knitwear is made from high-quality natural fibers and should be hand-washed using the appropriate product (regular detergent for cotton/linen sweaters, wool detergent for wool or cashmere sweaters).
Do not put your Bonnegueule knit in the washing machine: the agitation and spin cycle can cause the fabric to felt or shrink.
Washing Instructions
Fill a basin (or bathtub) with cold to lukewarm water.
Add a little detergent, then submerge your knitwear and let it soak for a few minutes. Gently press the garment in the water to clean it.
To remove it, scoop it up in a ball, without pulling on one end to avoid distorting it.
Then gently squeeze it by hand, without twisting.
Drying
Lay your knitwear flat to dry, ideally on a towel, to absorb humidity and preserve its shape.
Avoid hanging it vertically on a hanger at all costs, as this will cause the knit to stretch under its own weight. Do not use a dryer either: it’s too harsh and may cause your garment to shrink significantly. Finally, do not dry your knitwear on (or too close to) a radiator: direct heat can weaken the fibers and cause shrinkage.
Storage
Once dry, fold your knitwear and store it flat.
Storing it on a hanger should also be avoid here: over time, it distorts the shoulders and stretches the garment.
Pilling
Pilling isn’t necessarily a defect. It occurs naturally on knits made from natural fibers (wool, cashmere, etc) due to everyday friction. It consists of shorter fibers that rise to the surface and clump together.
Minimize pilling by reducing friction: for example, we don’t recommend wearing a backpack directly over your Bonnegueule sweater.
If you see any, avoid pulling them out by hand: you risk damaging the knit by pulling on other fibers. Instead, use a comb or a lint shaver to gently remove them without weakening the garment.
What to do if there’s a stain?
Accidents happen quickly: coffee, sauce, wine… Here’s what to do.
Act quickly: the longer a stain sits, the more it sets into the fabric. As soon as possible, gently blot with a clean cloth or paper towel. Avoid rubbing: you risk spreading the stain.
Spot cleaning: it’s not always necessary to wash the entire sweater. Apply a little cold water with a small amount of suitable detergent, then gently dab.
As a last resort: if the stain persists, take your knitwear to the dry cleaner, who has specialized products to clean your garment.
