How to Care for Your Suit

A suit is an elegant, well-structured garment that will last for years if it is made from high-quality, natural fabrics and features a half-canvas construction, as we offer at Bonnegueule.

Taking good care of your suit is especially important to ensure it keeps looking good over the years.

One rule: dry cleaning

A suit should be dry cleaned.

The fabrics (often wool or delicate blends) and the construction (canvas, lining) cannot withstand machine washing.

Clean the jacket and pants together

Ideally, have the jacket and pants cleaned at the same time, even if only one of them seems dirty.

Why? Dry cleaning causes the fabric’s appearance to change slightly over time. So cleaning one piece more often than the other can, over time, create a slight color difference between the jacket and the pants.

How often should you have it cleaned?

A suit doesn’t need to be cleaned often:

Once or twice per season is enough in most cases.

In between cleanings, air it out.

Daily care

Air out your suit after each wear.

Use a clothes brush to remove dust and dirt.

Hang the jacket on a wide hanger that supports the shoulder structure.

Hang the pants neatly (with a crease or pleat).

What to do if there is a stain

Naturally, this issue of stains is more relevant for light-colored suits than dark ones.

Gently dab without rubbing to remove the “bulk” of the stain.

Then take it to the dry cleaner, who will remove the remaining of it.
