How to Care for your Shirt or Overshirt

Whether elegant or casual, shirts, and now overshirts, are an integral part of our everyday wardrobe. Made from high-quality natural fibers like cotton, linen, or wool, here are our tips for properly caring for your Bonnegueule shirt or overshirt.

The classic shirt

Washing

Machine wash at 30°C, use a gentle spin cycle.

Turn the shirt inside out before washing.

Fasten the buttons to preserve the shape.

Avoid overloading the machine and wash with similar colors.

Avoid the dryer, which can cause the fabric to shrink and wrinkle more.

Cotton shirts are generally easy to care for. With linen or a more open weave, you need to be a bit more careful to prevent the material from losing its shape.

Drying

Air dry on a hanger.

How often?

Generally, after 1 to 2 wears

Caring for a white shirt

Like a white T-shirt, a white shirt can turn yellow over time, especially around the collar and underarms. The culprits: sweat, sebum, and deodorant residue. What can you do?

How to prevent yellowing?

Wash your shirt as soon as possible after wearing it, especially if you’ve sweated in it.

Avoid deodorants that are too harsh or too heavy.

How to treat a yellowed collar?

Apply a small amount of laundry detergent directly to the area.

Rub very gently (with your fingers or a soft brush).

Let it sit for a few minutes before washing.

For more severe cases: you can use a mild stain remover suitable for white garments.

The overshirt

Overshirts generally require more care. In any case, follow the care instructions on the label. These may vary depending on the fabric and construction of the overshirt. However, here are the general guidelines:

Cotton overshirts: can often be machine-washed (gentle cycle), if the label permits.

Wool (Shetland or boiled wool) or linen overshirts: dry clean.

What to do if there’s a stain?

Gently dab without rubbing, using a (very) mild soapy solution if necessary.
On delicate fabrics like wool, avoid getting them wet or rubbing excessively.
If the stain persists, take your garment to the dry cleaner.
