Test: Derby shoes at Monsieur Mustache (not to mention shaving)

At the origin of Monsieur Mustache , three passionate friends who came together to found a brand that revisits the great classics of men's shoes: desert boots, derby and sneakers.

Monsieur Mustache shoes: a wide price range

Note: The models you will see will be available from mid-February 2015.

The entire collection is designed to allow everyone to have a pair that they like, and according to their budget. They are also very easy to wear, whatever your style, simply because the brand's bias is to offer versatile models .

The design is dressy, but with a set of materials and colors that are easy to integrate into many outfits, without any hassle. Not bad for avoiding scratching your head in front of the mirror every morning.

FW14 Mr. Mustache

This winter 2014 collection uses suede leather and shades of brown on simple and fine shapes.

Versatility is really the advantage I find in these shoes! They can go very well with an office outfit, as well as an evening outfit. And those who don't have an expandable budget will be delighted to have shoes that allow multiple uses. For summer, Monsieur Mustache has prepared a fairly wide range, with eight models available in several colors. That makes it a choice.

Robert - SS15 Monsieur Mustache

This "Robert" model, in canvas and perforated suede, is available in summer colors. Wear on the beach with sunglasses. Around €70.

Leonard - SS15 Mister Mustache

The "Leonard" model, more formal, brings that little something of elegance even with a linen shirt and wrinkled chinos. Trust the two-tone model to catch the eye and reveal all your seductive aura (€150).

The brand also offers soft desert boots , which are very practical to put on and comfortable all day long. The crepe wedge sole and the sandal stitching make the shoe light, so that it is quickly forgotten.

Prices range around €70 for the simplest models, and €180 for models with leather soles made in Portugal. Intermediate references allow you to have desert boots , and certain models of summer shoes, for around a hundred euros.

Dressy, yes, but comfortable

Thibault from M. Mustache, whom you will find in an interview with Who's Next 2014 , explains to us that he designed his shoes so that each user gets the greatest comfort. And he leaves nothing to chance. If some shoes have a dressier design than the rest of the collection, he wanted to ensure that this was not to the detriment of comfort!

Léon black leather M Mustache

“Léon”: A sober and discreet model which contains a few surprises for your feet, which are too often abused.

However, it is often the case that a leather shoe will be slightly uncomfortable the first time you wear it. We will see that the experience of Long, our tester, was very different. We chose the Léon model for this item, the dressiest in the range! The leather sole, the integrated commando pad, and manufacturing in Portugal , place this model at a higher level compared to the others of the brand.

Surprisingly, the first thing you notice is that the sole of the shoes has a built-in commando pad. This way, there is no need to put a pad on your shoes.

Model Louis - Monsieur Mustache

The commando sole is used on combat boots, it is designed to meet the requirements of grip and adaptation to the terrain, necessary for an army shoe.

I'm not saying that you will only save on installing skates. In fact, the integrated pad will also serve to cushion the contact of the sole on the pavement. It is thicker than a classic skate, and this makes city walking much more comfortable.

Those accustomed to city shoes clicking in the corridors of the metro will recognize themselves, this unpleasant sensation of "resonance" in the joints, or in the foot, will only be a distant memory. Besides, no more shoes that slip on rainy days, the commando sole and its foolproof grip will delight more than one person (and me first). Watch out for the smooth sole, I won't say it twice!

Long commented on how comfortable he felt in these slippers! Sorry, in these shoes. After wearing the Léon model throughout Pitti Uomo, he only described a feeling of fatigue (note from Geoffrey: he must have still been hungry), but no pain due to rubbing or heel pain. This was the most elaborate field test possible: Long had to film men pretending to be on the phone for hours.

Monsieur Mustache derby test

My first instinct, when I know I'm going to walk a lot, is certainly not to wear leather shoes, because I know what awaits me. But Long played the guinea pig to the end, and was willing to suffer for the sake of our test.

Long walks the Parisian pavement with comfort

City walking is characterized by walking on hard ground. All athletes can attest to the importance of the cushioning of a sole on joint health. This is why you need to focus on quality insoles that have good cushioning .

Of course, this depends a lot on the type of ground you're on, but please take a few minutes to look at the soles of the shoes in your closet. Tell yourself that if they are closer to the sole of a ballerina , your joints will hurt in a few years.

Before Long locked himself in his lair to edit videos, I managed to get him to take a few photos of his outfit. He likes to wear them in a fairly dressy context, but I assure you that they go with almost everything 😉

Long leaves the office, his shoes fit naturally into a formal outfit. Zara shirt and blazer, H&M pants.

After the aperitif, once the jacket has fallen off, Long has already lost his legendary seriousness. But it remains elegant in all circumstances.

Conclusion

We won't blame Monsieur Mustache for the weakness of its range, there is a lot of choice and freshness in the models offered. The comfort of the integrated commando skate allowed our dear Long not to suffer from these hours of walking on cobblestones.

This is therefore a very positive result for Monsieur Mustache, who offers shoes at fair prices for the market, even if I would tend to pay less for intermediate models.
