Test: Surmon31 custom-made shirts

After the success of the article on Opalona white shirts , BonneGueule continues to test shirts with, today, a brand of tailor-made shirts that you order on the Internet . You definitely have heard of this type of service, which has increased greatly in recent years.

For those who don't know: you take your own measurements, you send them to the site, you place an order, and your shirt arrives ready-made generally 15 days later. You should know that initially, I was very skeptical about these offers , because I had often heard bad things about quality.

So it was with great curiosity that I received my shirt from the Surmon31 shirt brand, not without some apprehension... For around sixty euros, what can we expect?

No need to prolong the suspense...

As soon as you open the package, it's a surprise: the quality is excellent! First point, the fabric is much more beautiful than in the photo, it really exudes quality and is unique. My first instinct is obviously to touch the collar and there too, there are only positives: the collar is very thick and rigid as can be . A good iron-on like we do more (certainly not at Zara in any case). Obviously, it also has non-removable ribs.

The same goes for the cuffs, which hold excellently... I continue my careful inspection by observing the seams: it's fine and regular, nothing to complain about . As for the buttons, here too, the work is impeccable, not a thread sticks out.

Meticulously, I also observe the inside of the slits at the cuffs, it is rigorously well sewn, nothing sticks out:

(this little place is very indicative of the care that the manufacturer takes for its products. Check it systematically)

I then finish by looking at the armpits, where everything is perfectly aligned :

I have to face the facts, the finishes are excellent and worthy of a high-end shirt . Surmon31 has chosen his workshop remarkably well . I unfold the shirt and put it on without further delay.

The cup

Here too, not much to complain about, the measurements were respected, and the shirt fits me like a glove. I gave the pattern for a Melinda Gloss shirt because their cut suits me perfectly and it was reproduced well, almost: the shoulders are a bit too narrow, but maybe that's me who I made a mistake in my measurements, not much is missing, just a little extra centimeter to have a cut with zero defects. But given the overall quality which is excellent, I happily forgive them.

The fit is perfect, the shirt is adjusted to the millimeter without there being the slightest fold of tension in the torso !

Okay, and to take your measurements?

You have two choices:

  • or a friend takes your body measurements. This is the choice that I strongly advise against, because believe me, it is a whole profession that requires real training . Don't venture to measure your arm length or chest measurement yourself, you can be sure that there will inevitably be a problem in the final shirt. And don't listen to the purists who claim that the only worthwhile tailor-made item is clothing whose measurements have been taken from your body! Let's go to the most effective one.
  • the second choice is the one I recommend: you take the measurements of a shirt that fits you perfectly , and you send everything to the site. It is the simplest solution, the easiest to implement, and above all the least risky!

Go further…

For people who have a very particular body shape, this is the kind of essential service . Let me explain: if you are very slender (some readers will recognize themselves), it is very rare to find a shirt that fits you perfectly. In ready-to-wear, you will have a model whose sleeves will be the right length, but which will be too short, you will have another piece whose length will be good, but whose sleeves will be too short, or with too much bending. loose, etc.

To fully use Surmon31, you can mix the different parts of several shirts to obtain THE perfectly suited shirt . For example, you give the length of the sleeves of your Bill Tornade shirt because you know that is what suits you best, but you give the measurements of the fit of your Zara shirt, which is more suitable. The same goes for the neckline of your Martin Margiela shirt. Etc. And in the end you get a shirt that fits your body perfectly!

Conclusion ?

I therefore completely recommend Surmon31: the quality/price ratio is excellent . You really get what you pay for. For a little more expensive than a Zara shirt, you have much better fabric, much better finishes, and a perfectly tailored cut. Likewise, as I said, if you have a size outside the PAP standard (you are short, slender, etc.), I strongly encourage you to try this type of service at least once.

Info: between €55 and €65 per tailor-made shirt

Note: and to reread, the article on tailor-made in Paris , and the one on how to choose a shirt !
