Tips: What you can do with a pea coat (feat. le BGCH-01/02)

Note: we hope you enjoy watching this video as much,
How much we had to turn it!

You've heard a lot about the peacoat since you started to take an interest in the way you dress. And paradoxically, it is a garment that has been rarely discussed at BonneGueule, even if Geoffrey had already tried on an Armor Lux pea coat, and had taken the opportunity to draw up the history of this garment.

However, it is a garment that does not lack advantages:

  • Since it is short, it is easier to wear than a long coat . Especially when you are young, where the long coat can quickly seem out of step with your lifestyle... Moreover, the fact that it is quite short makes access to the jeans pockets easier.
  • Most of the time it is in timeless and easy colors, like navy blue or, more rarely, gray. It's hard to go wrong in how to wear it with such classic colors...
  • It fits well into a casual outfit, but also more dressy ones.
  • It is a very warm coat, because a (good) pea coat is systematically made from a dense woolen cloth, due to its appropriation by sailors.
  • The collar, when it is slightly raised, gives quite a presence . Even Sylvester Stallone, in The Expendables 2 , agrees:

“I like peacoats, except for shootouts.”

So on the occasion of the release of the BGCH-01 and BGCH-02, we decided to take the opportunity to show you an overview of the possibilities with a peacoat.

Note: On the other hand, we could not show you the peacoats with the mismatched collars and martingales, because we had only received a blue S and a gray M when writing this article (the removable collars were not not the same circumference from one size to another).
However, it enhances the room nicely, while remaining sober.

Peacoat + formal outfit: yes sir!

To the question “can you wear a peacoat over a jacket?” , I answer yes . The first thing to check is the length: the jacket must not exceed the peacoat . Fortunately, this rarely happens, unless you choose a very short peacoat (especially since today, jackets are shorter than before).

There is also a question of comfort to take into account , because if the pea coat has a shoulder that is a little too "rigid", it will "conflict" with that of the jacket. Moreover, each time you put on a coat or a peacoat over a jacket, have the reflex to pull your jacket sleeves under the sleeves of the peacoat, so the shoulder of the jacket will naturally sit well from that you will move .

On the other hand, avoid closing your jacket under your peacoat, as it can become uncomfortable as soon as you sit down and get up.

A dressy outfit, but not too...

Here is proof that a peacoat can be worn without too much problem with a jacket underneath:

Open pea coat to show you that I really have a jacket underneath! And you see, the jacket doesn't stick out. I'm wearing (old) Costume National boots, BGR-01 jeans, a Louis Purple shirt, a Melinda Gloss jacket, and COS gloves.

This is the kind of simple, effective outfit most readers will wear. Note that as usual, we play on the contrasts of materials between garments. And a peacoat wool sheet is something that lends itself well to this game.

A more formal outfit, with a tie

Dressier still: Florian, and his usual slender figure (he categorically refuses to wear jeans with a leg opening of more than 18 cm!). He also took part in the game.

The collar of the peacoat allows your tie to be visible when you go to work in a suit. And a sufficiently fitted peacoat cut (we always emphasize this point) will go even better with slightly tight pants, like most suit pants (or Florian's jeans!).

"Wait before you take the photo! I'm not ready yet
with my tie!”

IMG_9198

“That’s good!” (and still no jacket sticking out of the peacoat.)

And the little knitted tie that goes well...

Therefore, if the peacoat hides the jacket as much as possible, you don't have to wonder which jacket to wear/buy with which peacoat...

A more colorful outfit, even in winter

Where you can stand out and be a little more original is on the pants , as Luca will prove to you...

Laurent often repeats that Italians are very comfortable with the color of their clothes. This is why Luca made his transalpine origins work in this outfit:

Now, are you convinced that gray goes very well with red?
And that gray effectively calms a bright color?

IMG_9222

We just have to add a casual shirt, which will contrast with the structured peacoat, and we come across another nice combination.

Yes, but the red pants are too complicated for me...

To stay in the red color, let's also mention Alexandre, surprisingly not very streetwear in this outfit. There we find really super simple clothes, which Alexandre “awakens” with the raspberry red note of his New Balance sneakers.

The interest of this outfit lies in the New Balance - Made in UK (Alexandre insists on this precision). The outfit has very sober pieces (raw jeans, white shirt with blue stripes, gray sweater), so it is essential to have a twist, something that contrasts with the rest.

I really like it when the collar of the peacoat is raised, but Alexandre prefers to wear it in a more classic way. It's up to you to choose what you prefer!

Another casual outfit, with high-top sneakers

Also very simple, this outfit which incorporates high-top sneakers:

Melinda Gloss chambray shirt, COS gloves, DRKSHDW jeans and BGNS sneakers.

And the same kind of outfit by Geoffrey:

Monoprix chambray shirt, BG671 cardigan (with Six&Sept),
BGFT-01 jeans (with FrenchTrotters), BGNS-01 sneakers (with National Standard).

A more raw outfit... but also more comfortable

In a totally different register, you can push the formal/casual contrasts even further, with this Geoffrey outfit. Note that the outfit remains in very sober colors, but relies on numerous contrasts between the materials and styles specific to each piece.

Ultimately, we have an easy and ultra comfortable outfit, but in no way dull or boring.

The Melinda Gloss dressy wool pants, the well-structured peacoat, and the chunky knit contrast sharply with the Heschung combat boots and
the BGLY-01 t-shirt, which makes the outfit interesting.

Only one color, blue. But in three shades. And above all, with several very different materials and textures, which fleshes out an outfit that would otherwise be too monochrome.

And the closed peacoat, which you are starting to know well!
