After our first women's capsule launched in July 2021, we continue to lay the foundations of our women's wardrobe, by offering two essential items of clothing:
- the famous white jeans that can be worn with everything and that instantly add a "little something extra" to an outfit,
- the mottled sweatshirt that will accompany you everywhere, under all your jackets and coats
And you will see that the development of this capsule was an adventure, because I have always said: the seemingly simplest clothes are the most epic to develop, because you can't cheat. You absolutely need an impeccable fit and beautiful materials, preferably from organic farming.
That's what we did for our very first women's sweatshirt and our first white jeans...
Another huge thank you to Miyoko Yasumoto for allowing us to do this shooting in her studio.
Our stretch white jeans in GOTS organic cotton
And we wanted to think of these jeans in a respectful way:
- The GOTS certified organic cotton fabric comes from Italy, from a weaver who has placed eco-responsibility at the heart of his project (video on this subject below)
- and he went up to Portugal,
- It is therefore a jean of 100% European production, between Portugal and Italy.
But before I get into the details, let me give a shout out…
Plea for white jeans (in organic cotton)
I'll get straight to the point: white jeans are one of your best assets in your wardrobe, and nothing saddens me more than seeing a person (whether male or female) not dare to wear this piece... or simply have prejudices about it.
I asked women around me who regularly wear white jeans, and very often, it is the jeans they prefer and/or the ones they wear most often.
This allows you to bring a stronger statement to an outfit than a classic pair of jeans, while remaining elegant… or very casual. Whether it’s a pair of heels or sneakers, everything will work!
A blank canvas for all your outfits
White jeans, in addition to brightening up your outfit, are a very practical color base that will elegantly match many colors. For example, it will beautifully highlight camel, brown, sand, greige tones (my favorite colors for the coming fall).
But if you want to play with stronger contrasts, it's a great ally: it will beautifully highlight your leathers or your more fanciful coats.
And if you like to wear denim or chambray shirts, I also find that white jeans are a perfect companion for these textures.
Among its unsuspected qualities, it is also a piece that mixes very well with vintage pieces like an olive military jacket, or a pair of Van's.
But can we wear white jeans in winter?
YES, YES and YES.
While white jeans are indeed very practical in summer, this should not obscure their interest in winter: they brighten up an outfit and bring out the textures of your other pieces. For example, they will highlight the quality of the leather of your shoes, or the texture and color of your coat.
And by the way, there are so many fashion bloggers who love this piece that there are tons of winter outfit photos with white jeans to discover. !
But isn't it too dirty as a room?
To wear white jeans regularly (I remind you that I own 3), it's not really a problem. Indeed, wearing them for a week in a row may not be possible, but quite frankly, it's a piece that can be washed without any difficulty.
Is this a piece that will develop a patina?
Obviously, it won't fade like raw denim. But with use, it will become even more supple, and in a way, it will acquire a patina that is quite difficult to explain, but like any jeans worthy of the name. , he will become more and more beautiful as he ages.
Why a canvas from the Italian weaver Candiani?
As a reminder, Candiani is an Italian denim supplier with whom we have been working for a long time on our fabrics for our men's jeans.
We loved this supplier's vision so much that we chose them for our very first women's jeans, launched during our "capsule test" in June 2019.
We particularly appreciate them for two reasons:
- Their expertise in stretch is mainly reflected in their mastery of "recovery", namely a stretch that returns well to its initial shape once it is worn, and which does not form bags everywhere.
- It's a great company, a pioneer in "clean" jeans, and we went to film them to make a report (the only one in French)
There would still be a ton of stories to tell you about Candiani: the family transmission, the technologies invented to recycle water, the dyeing under nitrogen, the project of biodegradable jeans, the location of the factory in the middle of a natural park and the responsibility that falls to them to preserve this place…
To learn more, and to avoid this article being three kilometers long, I invite you to read the presentation of Candiani where I tell about my visit to their factory , at the time when we created our gray selvedge jeans.
Identity card of our jeans fabric
- Fabric thickness: 420 g/m2 (12.5 oz)
- Composition: 98% GOTS cotton, and 2% elastane for comfort
The weaving is done using the 72 WARP method, another Candiani innovation that has celebrated its 25th anniversary. The warp threads form a sort of ring, which gives a real grain and relief to the material.
A long-worked cut
Between our first pair of women's jeans in 2019 and these, we wanted to take advantage of this time to refine the cut again and again, and we were satisfied after 5 prototypes, which is a lot for one piece (usually, everything is sorted out in 2 or 3 prototypes).
It's always that tricky balance to find between a flattering silhouette and comfort.
And I want to thank all the women on our team who helped us on this, including those who weren't in the product department!
After the jeans, let's move on to the other GOTS organic cotton piece in this capsule, an iconic garment that never ages: the sweatshirt.
Our GOTS organic cotton sweatshirt
We didn't want to offer yet another simple sweatshirt on the market, we wanted a piece with a more marked identity, a very sophisticated fit, and a real CSR dimension.
And like our jeans, we wanted a sweatshirt with European production:
- GOTS organic cotton jersey is knitted in Portugal
- and the material is then sent to Bulgaria, to a manufacturer specializing in the production of high-end women's clothing, who is able to venture into more creative projects.
A development fraught with pitfalls
But the development of this sweatshirt was epic: we first had to deal with a shortage of GOTS organic cotton yarn in Portugal, and therefore had to postpone this sweatshirt.
As for prototyping, it took no less than six prototypes to find THE shape we liked, which is huge for a sweatshirt, we have never needed so many prototypes on a men's sweatshirt! Like jeans, it's a delicate balance to find between a comfortable shape without falling into an oversized side.
But here we really wanted a perfect fit, and an impeccable development of our shoulder, not quite like the others…
A shoulder not quite like the others…
To give more uniqueness to this essential, we thought of a more worked shoulder than we usually see, with a slightly more original volume.
We can see it as a nod to our taste for the tailoring world where this type of shoulder with gathers is found on very high-end Italian suits… or also as a desire on our part to bring a twist to the traditional sweatshirt!
