Tips: What colors to wear? Stop worrying… #2

Conseils : Quelles couleurs porter ? Arrêtez de vous prendre la tête… #2

It's time to put the colors in order. It's become nonsense... and I'll explain why. And also how to achieve this:

As you know, more and more men are very concerned about dressing in the right colors. And it’s a question that I’ve often been asked during a makeover: “Benoit, what colors suit me?”

The problem is that when it comes to colors, we really hear anything and everything. Most makeover agencies have made it a central point in their services... by developing a whole bunch of incongruous tools: theory of seasons, draping test, even chromopsychology (we're not kidding!)

So I'm going to be very clear: I think these tools are useless.

These men have been condemned for life to dress in red, yellow, green and purple by Holy Chromopsychology (bonus game: which one is less lucky?)

Color theory (be careful, one leg is missing from the table...)

For starters, telling a man who knows nothing about wearing blue doesn't make sense, because there is blue and blue . If there are cheap materials, there are also quantities of really cheap colors, often linked to the quality of the material (but that's another story). And some beautiful colors have absolutely nothing to do with the color chart or the sheets used in a makeover agency, that's the whole problem.

Because advice like "Well, you're more winter than autumn, you need warmer colors, it will warm up your complexion, your complexion, and it goes well with your personality" is difficult to interpret for a man who only has Saturday afternoon Celio as its standard of clothing.

Do you (really) think Don is wondering what to wear in the morning?
(he should pay more attention to the length of his tie...)

Honestly, I myself don't understand much about this kind of recommendation, and this method, in addition to being extremely vague, absolutely does not teach you how to find your way around the store and build your style with pieces that suit you.

The advice I like to give is to see as much high-end clothing (HDG) as possible, to be used to spotting beautiful shades (without necessarily buying right away, eh). And take a trip to Jules or Celio afterwards: you’ll understand where I’m going with this. It is very important to educate your eye about color. Going to see an exhibition, admiring a landscape are also habits to adopt, as they can only be beneficial (even if they go beyond the strict framework of this blog).

After noticing that the best styles often had sober colors (not all the time, but mostly), Geoffrey and I use a simple method in men's makeovers :

  • be based above all on contrasts: the contrast between two items of clothing must be of the same order as that between skin and hair ,
  • recall certain tones of the body (eye color, cheek color, hair color) with accessories of the same color,
  • take simple colors (white, gray, blue and a little black) and pastels,
  • never neglect the importance of the cut. I am convinced that a man wearing only black and white will have much more style than another man dressing according to this damn theory of the 4 seasons...
  • Sober colors necessarily require beautiful materials: it's up to you (or me) to find them.

Experience colors in a relaxed way 🙂

Last thing, don't get too carried away with the colors . As I tirelessly repeat: do your best to have impeccable cuts and materials... especially concerning your men's basics which will be very easy to embellish with colorful pieces (purple shirts with a gray jacket for example).
