Personalization and accessories (+ Losco, patinas, and Make&Mark)

We have already spoken on the subject in the BonneGueule Book: accessories are essential to give personality to an outfit. But there are many pitfalls, the ostentatious or the outmoded often lurking around...

How to choose your accessories?

First of all, we must avoid conveying signs of wealth through accessories. We will therefore do without if possible:

  • Curb bracelets and other chains that were given to you at your first communion, unless you really want them a lot,
  • Initials that appear everywhere (you are not descended from the Sun King),
  • The same goes for the replicas of the Lord of the Rings ring : it does not make you invisible but makes its wearer appear to be a geek in a very visible way,
  • And big leather strength bracelets : too imposing. I won't even mention all the quills and picots we find in the panoply of the perfect Gothic.

Unless you're friends with Johny Depp, strength bracelets won't make your outfits subtle.

Certain accessories, although very marked by a subculture (surf, skate, gothic, punk), can nevertheless be integrated into an outfit if it is in line with who you are. But always go with small touches, don't go for the total look . So what remains acceptable in this case? Are you condemned to only wearing men's scarves as accessories? No not necessarily. There are a large number of possible alternatives:

  • Leather bracelets that are sufficiently thin and sober ,
  • Rosaries or other amulets brought back from your travels,
  • Details related to your culture : Asian, Arab, African, or simply regional (people of Breizh, stop walking around everywhere with a flag !).

And then watchmaking of course : a separate subject which can be luxurious as long as it remains discreet. No big bracelets or overly bulky dials, no overload of chronographs… (Teasing: discover this week the guide on how to choose a watch, by Luc, apprentice watchmaker).

Beyond the choice of item, the question of personalizing accessories and clothing may arise. Here are the last 3 customizations that the BonneGueule team carried out:

Personalize your belt: Losco

The Losco brand offers a very large choice of leathers and buckles, to ultimately give you a belt that suits your size and your taste. It's not a very visible accessory, but it can be interesting to spend a little more for customization when you know that the belt is an accessory that is often kept for around ten years.

You will find a large number of buckles, materials and other customization details at the Losco store.

Refinish the patina of your shoes: yourself

Elegant people in search of sensation have always appreciated wearing unique examples of shoes while skating them. There are a host of techniques to apply and mixtures to make to breathe new life into an old pair of shoes.

Before and after my homemade patina.

I already risked it last year, with a pair of brown shoes (won in a competition) which were a duplicate in my wardrobe. I decided to give them blue highlights and darken them (I would still have preferred less dark ankle boots). If the subject interests you, I talked about it in my old blog ( how to skate your shoes and also the second part ).

Add a visual: Make and Mark laser engraving

I discovered Make and Mark thanks to Valéry from the BonneGueule team. Paul and Samuel are two friends who launched the concept of tattooing objects last year. The idea is simple: you come with a visual and an object, and they engrave it directly into the material.

The welcome is great and Paul and Samuel really take care of the objects entrusted to them for an excellent result.

Their method is a diversion of laser engraving (initially a technique used in industry). The laser removes a light layer of material on any support (leather, stone, plastic, metals) to engrave your visual in grayscale (not colors, but the variation of the base color).

They offered to try it, so I left my laptop hostage with them. I recovered the MacBook Air intact: the engraving process is harmless because it is only on the surface and very localized. Here's the result :

You will recognize the hostess of the Facebook page .

It's not fair play, but I also gave him a tramp stamp without asking him...

The result is indelible and does not fade over time (which requires a minimum of thought before taking action... a bit like before getting a butterfly tattoo on your lower back). For a phone or a wallet, it costs around thirty euros. A larger project (briefcase, computer) will cost closer to a hundred euros.

Thanks to the Make and Mark team. Address: 35 rue des martyrs, Paris (Metro Saint-Georges or Pigale).
