Hi it's Nicolò, and like every Friday, here's a new episode of (Très) Bien Habillé for you.
Moreover, on Friday, in times immemorial when many people still had dress codes in offices... It was the day of "casual Friday". We took out a button-down shirt with chinos, put a blazer on top, and it said "Heeey, it's Friday, I'm working but I'm already on a bit of a weekend, YES!"
Except that today, being dressed like that would already be more “formal” than the Monday office outfits of the vast majority of the population.
And we come to our subject: you want to wear a shirt in a relaxed, stylish look , but not "dressy"... No matter how much we tell you "choose a casual shirt", it gives you a nice leg, since now the The vast majority of shirts are “non-formal”.
But do not worry !
A shirt is made up of a certain number of visual elements, each of which brings a connotation, a “flavor”. And by dosing them more or less strongly, you obtain a shirt that goes more with one style than another.
So you simply need to learn to recognize these ingredients and their flavors!
1. THE RIGHT PASS
Where to start if not at the beginning?
The collar is the first thing you see on a shirt, and it's what is the most discriminating when it comes to making it a more dressy or more formal shirt.

On this AKOG shirt, a buttoned collar that is not too large (nor tiny), typical of contemporary casual shirts.
I had already talked about collar size before in a dedicated episode but a reminder doesn't hurt! I also have a word or two about which collar styles are potentially casual, and which are definitely not.
2. POCKETS
Not obligatory on a casual shirt but, all the same... It gives it character!
If you haven't already done so, read my "Compendium" on shirt and overshirt pockets , you will see that there is a wide variety, and that their impact on style is great!
3. OTHER DETAILS
Mother-of-pearl or horn buttons, round or more elaborate cuffs, hidden throat, simple or American...
Taken together, these details are as important as a collar or a type of pocket in determining the style of a shirt!
4. THE FABRIC
Vast subject than the fabric of a shirt.
In fact, it would be vast regardless of the type of room: there will always be too many to list them all.
Too many colors , properties, pattern textures...

A basket weave fabric from Kuroki, dyed in indigo and washed in a lighter blue. Very textured, and therefore typically very casual. ( Good mouth )
So, instead, I'm going to explain to you what makes a fabric more casual, and what makes it more dressy: it doesn't matter what "type" it is!
